BA (Hons) Visual Effects Production
Course Overview:
Visual Effects (or VFX) is one of the fastest growing segments of the film industry and this unique two-year intensive degree has been designed to educate and inspire imaginative, versatile digital artists and problem-solvers. The course aims to provide students with a robust set of film production and post-production VFX skills, which can both lead to a number of entry-level positions, including Junior VFX Artist or Junior Compositor, and are also transferable to other industries such as television, advertising, game design and new media.
Learning Objectives:
- To appreciate film theory and language, and understand its application to the development of visual effects
- To develop of a core set of traditional film production skills that provide the context for the production of visual effects within the entire filmmaking process
- To know how to observe, interpret and visualise FX shots from design sketches, storyboards and live action footage, for a variety of applications within the entertainment industry
- To learn how to seamlessly integrate live action elements into a VFX shot or understanding of the cultural and historical context of VFX
- To gain an understanding of the managerial and professional skills required within the VFX industry
- To master practical camera skills and understand their integration within the visual effects production pipeline
- To learn the practical and aesthetic skills required for the successful simulation of photorealistic digital elements
Production Experience:
- Write, direct and edit one professionally graded short fiction film with the support of a professional Script Editor, Director of Photography and Editor
- Benefit from the professional facilities of our sister company Met Film Post, which is in the process of relocating to Ealing Studios
- Receive the support of our course partner, Men From Mars, one of London’s leading VFX companies, also based at Ealing Studios
- Collaborate with other students as part of a film production team and work alongside undergraduates in both traditional filmmaking and post-production
- Gain experience shooting and integrating computer generated 3D environments into live action footage, lighting, shooting and keying elements shot against a green screen, and integrating animated 3D elements within a live action shot
- Undertake and independent VFX research project within an area of particular interest under tutor supervision
- Optional 14- week work placement at a VFX facility
